Now is as good a time as any to share a little about myself, Mark Loe, and the purpose of this page. I was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago in the Caribbean, where I was introduced to sailing in 1974 at the age of 12.
Growing up in the Caribbean during the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s, and early 2000s was an incredible experience—arguably one of the best lifestyles one could hope for. I made lifelong friends and grew up outdoors, playing sports and enjoying all the islands had to offer. We lived in the sea, whether it was sailing, surfing, fishing, or simply embracing island life.
My passion for sailing took hold early, and I quickly became immersed in the Caribbean regatta scene, racing and moving sailboats across the islands. It was an exhilarating time. In 1996, I opened my own sail loft, doing something I loved every day—a dream come true.
Fast forward to 2018: after 22 years of running the sail loft, the last five as Ullman Sails Trinidad, I had experienced it all. From competing in regattas on outstanding boats with amazing teammates to winning division and overall titles at every major regatta in the Caribbean. Alongside racing, I built strong relationships with cruising customers, delivering and repairing countless sails and canvas projects. I even served as President of the Trinidad and Tobago Sailing Association, promoting the sport—especially among youth—and navigating government and World Sailing responsibilities. It was a rewarding and fun chapter of my life. But, as all good things must come to an end, I made the decision to migrate to the USA for the betterment of my family.
Now, I find myself in Massachusetts with a wealth of knowledge and experience to share. Naturally, it’s time to help others who may be seeking advice or information. This website and blog are my platforms to share stories from my sailing adventures, review and discuss different aspects of the sport and lifestyle, and explore its evolving dynamics.
I’m also proud to represent Ullman Sails in the New England area. As part of a global sailmaking group staffed by passionate sailors and sailmakers, we’re here to meet your needs. Whether you’re racing at the highest level, cruising the bluewater, or enjoying casual daysailing, we’ve got the right sails for you.
